Woodturning The Elm Burr/Burl : A Large Pedestal Urn Lamp Base
Переглядів 3,2 тис.5 років тому
In this video i take a piece of the large Elm burr/burl and woodturn it to make a large pedestal/urn table lamp base. After roughing the blank into round i think that the wood is actually a tree canker that had burr caps on the outside of it, that said, it still has incredible colour and grain. Originally, I planned to fill the cracks and inclusions with resin but in the end decided to only sta...
Woodturning a Baby Rattle for my Son - Padauk and Ebony
Переглядів 6 тис.5 років тому
In this video I, at last, turn a Baby Rattle for my son Matthew. This rattle is a personal design that I sketched out and selected wood species for. I decided to laminate a striped pattern using Padauk, Ebony and Idigbo, with a solid Ebony handle. This rattle was turned in two parts to hollow the inside before a few small stones were placed inside to create the rattle sound. To keep it safe for...
Woodturning an Inside Out Christmas Tree Ornament with Suspended Snowman
Переглядів 31 тис.5 років тому
In this video I turn my first Inside Out woodturning project, a Christmas Tree Ornament with a Snowman suspended inside. The main turning is made from 4 pieces of Padauk each 30x30x160, and the finial and Snowman are turned from Spalted Norwegian Maple. Thank you to all my Subscribers for your continued support. Halloween Pumpkin/Jack O Lantern Hollow Form Part 2: Fixing and Refitting the Lid
Переглядів 6085 років тому
In this video I fix the mistake I previously made when trying to fit the lid to the Pumpkin. In order to fix the oversized opening in the pumpkin I first round off a piece of walnut and taper it to act as a plug which I can glue into the opening of the pumpkin thus allowing me to turn a new opening. The addition of the walnut band around the top does a lot to make the overall appearance of the ...
Turning a Halloween Pumpkin/Jack O Lantern Hollow Form: Part 1
Переглядів 2 тис.5 років тому
In this video I turn a Halloween Pumpkin/Jack O Lantern from a large piece of seasoned Elm with accents in Walnut. The pumpkin measures 10" in diameter and 5" high and is fully hollowed on the inside. The handle is turned from a piece of Walnut and stands roughly 4" high. The facial features were cut and carved using a drill, coping saw and a variety of files. The entire piece is finished with ...
Segmented Fruit Bowl With Purple Heart Rim
Переглядів 1,6 тис.6 років тому
In this video i turn another commissioned fruit bowl similar to the one i made a few months ago. It was made up following the same cutting list as the previous bowl with the exception of the rim which is Purple Heart in this case instead of African Padauk. The Purple Heart adds a striking finish to the bowl. I hope you enjoyed watching the turning of this bowl. Thank you to all my Subscribers f...
Turning an African Padauk Key/Small Change Bowl
Переглядів 1,6 тис.6 років тому
In this video I turn a bowl from a piece of African Padauk that is 8"x3". This was my first time turning a solid piece of Padauk and I was very impressed at how well it turned and finished. It was sanded to 320, sealed with oil, buffed with Yorkshire Grit and finally finished with Hampshire Sheen. I hope you enjoyed this video, thanks to all my Subscribers for your continued support. Making My Own Negative Rake Scraper - Iroko Handle
Переглядів 51 тис.6 років тому
In this video I make my own negative rake scraper using a piece of High Speed Steel that is 6x25x200. I grind a tang onto one end using a 6" wheel grinder before turning a handle from Iroko. Once the steel is glued into the handle I grind a curve onto the end of the blade using the wheel grinder. I then use the Robert Sorby Pro Edge to grind a 25 degree bevel on both sides and sharpen a keen ed...
Turning a Full Majestic Set - Rollerball, Fountain, Ballpoint and Letter Opener - Lapis Lazuli
Переглядів 2,5 тис.6 років тому
In this video I turn a full Majestic set of pens with a letter opener. The blanks I use are a synthetic Lapis Lazuli polyester blank which finishes to a high gloss with the appearance if the semi precious stone Lapis Lazuli. There are flecks of gold throughout the blank which represents Pyrite, which is usually found in the stone. I hope you enjoy this video. Special thanks to my Subscribers. P...
Turning a Synthetic Yellow Burl Workshop Sketch Pencil
Переглядів 1,1 тис.6 років тому
In this video I turn a workshop sketch pencil for my father's birthday. His favourite colour is yellow so the blank I chose is a yellow synthetic burl, similar to the green synthetic burl i used for my own sketch pencil. I hope you enjoy this video and like the blank as much as i do. Thank you to all my Subscribers for your continued support. If you haven't already please Subscribe and check ou...
Segmented Fruit Bowl Pt 3: Turning and Finishing the Bowl
Переглядів 4,9 тис.6 років тому
In this video I turn and finish the segmented fruit bowl I was commissioned to make. It's turned using a 1/2'" spindle gouge and a round nose scraper, before being sanded to 400 grit, burnished with shavings, oiled and finally finished with Yorkshire Grit, Hampshire Sheen High Gloss on the outside and pure Carnauba Wax on the inside. It's amazing seeing the various species (Walnut, Maple, Sapel...
Segmented Fruit Bowl Pt 2: Milling the Maple, Sapele and Padauk and Glueing Rings
Переглядів 6 тис.6 років тому
In this video I begin work on the fruit bowl I have been commissioned to make. I mill the Maple, Sapele and Padauk into strips and then cut them into segments using my bandsaw. Once all 160 segments are cut I glue them into rings and finally glue the rings together into a bowl blank. I hope you've enjoyed this video and found it instructive. Thanks to all my Subscribers for your continued suppo...
Segmented Fruit Bowl Pt 1: Bowl Design Using Segment Pro Software
Переглядів 11 тис.6 років тому
In this video I demonstrate the use of computer software Segment Pro in designing a segmented fruit bowl I've been commissioned to make. I run through the entire process until a bowl is full designed and I'm able to print a cutting list to take into the workshop. I also mention Martin Saban Smith, who has generously offered to donate some products for my 1,000 Subscriber giveaway. More details ...
Rough Turned - Oven Dried - Elm Fruit Bowl with part Natural Edge Rim
Переглядів 1,1 тис.6 років тому
In this video I rough turn a large piece of part seasoned Elm I acquired last year. I start by roughing out the blank so that i'm able to dry it in the oven to allow it to be finish turned sooner. The roughed out bowl is dried in the oven at 80 degrees C for 1.5hrs. It went from weighing 1,700g and 30% moisture to 1,400g and 12% moisture. The blank is the remounted on the lathe and finish turne...

I know this is 6 years old and you may not see this, but I would like two things explained. Your finish for one-how far did you sand and what friction polish did you use? Also, an explanation of how exactly you did the Celtic knot. Thanks

Tool steel is often shipped in an annealed state (maximally softened). If it won’t keep an edge, take the blade out of the handle and heat it with a torch until it no longer will stick to a magnet. Then plunge in old motor oil. When it cools down wipe off the oil and put the blade in your kitchen oven at 425 F for three hours. That will give you a properly hardened and tempered blade. If you grind it keep dipping the blade in cool water to avoid re softening the blade. I recently heat treated a bowl gouge I made of 0-1 tool steel and I am quite pleased with it. Frank

Great video, really enjoyed watching new with the tannin. I have done the 00000 steel wool, cleaning vinegar and 2 cups of coffee grounds for years. But now can’t wait to order some leaves off Amazon. I can’t recall if you hand a ratio of water to leaves, excuse me if you do, but is that usual mixture, 3 leaves to that amount of water? Or could you boil it down further to make a concentrate? Not sure that would work or not. Thanks for any comments. Take care and thanks again.

Nicely done the only things I would have done differently would be to pause and dip in cool water while grinding to prevent heating the steel to a blue colour Cut the tang with angle grinder with a cut off disk Drill the tang hole about 6 mm deeper Fix the blade to the handle with epoxy and leave a coat of epoxy on the end to enclose the end of handle and seal around the tang I would strike a Dimple in the side of the ferrel with centre punch and chamfer the edge of the ferrel slightly A very handsome.scraper that should serve you for years

Excellent result. I was skeptical about grinding out all that HS steel for the tang. I'm sure it warmed up a bit, but came out great. I don't have a belt grinder but it seemed to work so well for the bevel, I wonder if you could have used it for the tang too. Thanks for sharing.

Really inspirational -- you made that look so simple. I'm going to give it a shot. One additional thing -- it's incredible that I searched amazon for those same dimensions of bar stock and found that the 5 dollar price you quoted from 2018 has ballooned into about 10 dollars. Absolutely insane. Soul crushing this amount of inflation man. Anyway...
